Nowadays we are taught to revert to olden day practices in Africa as contemporary practices have deteriorated health to mankind. For example, in the past it was not a problem for pregnant woman to deliver a baby from the comfort of their own rural homes. Man used to spend nights hunting for animals to kill for food without fear of any health risk. However, in recent history most of such practices have been labeled evil, in-human, non-hygienic, stupid, uncalled for, waste of time, unhealthily, illegal, abusive, and all sorts of discouraging words. I’m a witness to this in my 30 years living in Swaziland (Southern Africa). As it is my practice to record national radio discussions and post them in my blog, today’s discussion covered a health problem for man despite their age. The scenario discussed was for a married couple where the husband has a problem of bedwetting all nights. This is indeed a problem that exists in our communities. As usual, callers voiced their suggested solutions to the problem. None of them suggested a medical solution, not even recommending a doctor. It must be surprising that in our modern world, people still don’t prioritize over the counter medication to their medical problems. Several suggested religious solutions such as praying for the victim and praying for the marriage as this is perceived as a demonic attack. I noted with interest one suggested solution that could assumed useless by many. Today people are more enlightened to superstitions than it was in the past. However, some of such superstitions used to produce the desired and expected results. His solution reminded me of our bedwetting solution as young boys. Our grand fathers used to tell us that the cause of bedwetting is looking straight to the moon at night. There was a special kind of locus that we were to each raw to stop the bedwetting problem. It used to work for us, but can almost tell that today that would be labeled a health risk or non-hygienic. I must say that it was my first time to hear of the ‘Rock Style Solution’. I choose to call it so because you need a rock to stop your bedwetting problem. All you do is spot a sloppy rock and pee at the top and rush to drink the head of the draining urine. It could be done several times but you must stop as soon as you have stopped bedwetting. I do take time to interpret these national radio discussions and make them available at my blog. Many would interpret this as a self punishment for wetting your bed. Yet the intension is not punishing the victim but helping him stop the habit.
