PLOT The Quileute and the Volturi close in on expecting parents Edward and Bella, whose unborn child poses different threats to the wolf pack and vampire coven. PART 1 — TELLING MUM. Bella picked up the phone and bit her lower lip. She didn’t know how to break this news to her mother, the devoted believer in late marriage. Would she forbid her to marry Edward? Would she carry her straight to Jacksonville after – ? ‘Hello?’ Renee’s voice answered from the other side of the line. Bella took in a deep breath. ‘Mum, I’m getting married to Edward.’ ‘Okay, baby, tell me when I’ve got to go so I can check Phil’s schedule.’ ‘What?’ Bella asked, confused. ‘You’re not going to tell me anything?’ ‘Of course not! That would ruin the rest of the plot, now, wouldn’t it? No, sweetie, I think you’re old enough to get married to whomever you want.’ ‘But you’re so opposed to marriage!’ ‘I know baby, but Mrs Meyer has been dying to write a wedding scene. From what I hear, hers was horrible, so now she’s canalizing her dreams through you. Besides, you’re more mentally mature than I was at your age, darling! I am a mature woman now, and I see my mistakes. You won’t make them. Now, where did I leave those jelly beans?’ ‘Mum, I’m eighteen,’ Bella insisted. ‘Do you want me to stop this wedding, Bella? Because all you do is try to convince me into stopping you.’ ‘No! No, not at all. I love Edward, mum. I do. He’s absolutely gorgeous and perfect in every physical aspect.’ ‘What about his …

A health watchdog has said that GPs and midwives need to do more to spot the signs of depression in pregnant women and new mothers. The National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has also said that women with anxiety or eating disorders also to be identified. The guidance was welcomed by mental health experts as one in seven women experience a mental health disorder at some point in pregnancy or after the birth. Currently only around 30% are being diagnosed with mental health issues during or after pregnancy. The mental health problems that pregnant women and new women are at risk of include depression, anxiety, eating disorders and severe mental health conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Dr Steve Pilling, a consultant clinical psychologist who worked on the guidance by NICE said that there was “very significant under-recognition” of mental health issues in pregnancy. NICE has advised that healthcare staff dealing with pregnant women or new mothers ask three questions during ante or postnatal checks:- Have you felt down, depressed or hopeless during the last month?- Have you been bothered by having little interest or pleasure in doing things?- Is this something you feel you need or want help with? The NICE guidance goes on to say that women needing psychological treatment should normally be seen within one month and no longer than three months after an initial assessment. Treatment for women with such problems may include counselling or anti-depressants, with the health worker explaining how medication may affect breastfeeding. Those who worked on the guidance have stressed the importance of using it to identify women who may be scared to ask for help for fear as being labelled as a “bad mother” or having their children taken away from them. They have also warned that leaving mental illness untreated could have consequences for both mother and child, including poor educational performance for the child and anxiety. Dr Gillian Leng, who led the team which compiled the guidance, said: “This is not just about helping women get through the ‘baby blues’ – we are looking at all types of mental health disorders and distinguishing the ups and downs of everyday life for more serious conditions.” Fiona Shaw, a patient who also helped draft the guidelines, told how she was admitted to a mental health unit after the birth of her second daughter. She was not eating and was self-harming but had been told by her doctor to either take anti-depressants and stop breastfeeding or just “grin and bear it”. She added: “Many women are concerned they will not be listened to if they come forward, or that they will be judged, or that their condition is not serious enough to warrant help from a healthcare professional.” Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, said: “We welcome these guidelines, which look to be a very promising start. The challenge, as always, will be ensuring that they are implemented. Parents deserve the very best support at the start of their child’s life. The resources to make these excellent guidelines a reality must be available, otherwise they risk becoming little more than a wish-list.”

A baby begins life even before he is born from conception until the uterus finally pushes hi out of his mother body. This is the phenomenon we call pregnancy. It starts when the male sperm unites with the female egg and develops into an embryo. While several women say they can already detect pregnancy from the moment of conception, some see the pregnancy symptoms much later. As the woman body prepares itself for child bearing, she will notice several changes. The telltale signs of pregnancy include the following: Absence of menstruation This is usually the first sign of pregnancy. Take note, though, that it should not always be linked with pregnancy symptoms, as missing your monthly period can also mean some other kind of hormonal imbalance or condition. Morning sickness It would be prudent to note that the pregnancy symptom called morning sickness does not happen only in the mornings. This feeling of dizziness can happen at any time of the day. The hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy generally trigger bouts of nausea and vomiting. Another related symptom would be constant tiredness, which a possibly pregnant woman experiences even if no physical activity had been performed .Strong craving for certain foods The cause of this pregnancy symptom is still undetermined. But pregnant women have been infamous for requesting demanding different kinds of food, owing to uncontrollable appetite urges. On some cases, strong craving is an understatement. Mood swings and headaches A woman emotions sometimes become slave to the hormonal changes linked with pregnancy. Quite common are bouts of depression, vagueness, listlessness and irritability. Sleepiness This symptom is not due to fatigue. Women who are pregnant usually long for sleep early in the evening. Again, blame the hormones. Frequent urination As the womb expands to make room for the growing fetus, it bears down on the urinary bladder, causing constant urges to pass urine. Some women have also been observed to develop white, creamy vaginal discharge during pregnancy, while the breasts tend to swell and grow tender .Not all signs of pregnancy are obvious. But when the above mentioned symptoms present themselves to you, and you have enough reason to suspect that you are pregnant, you must consult your doctor at once, preferably an obstetrician. The doctor will then run tests to find out whether you ARE pregnant and in which pregnancy level you are already in. If your doctor bears good news, that, indeed, a miracle has formed in your womb, congratulations You will soon be holding in your arms the greatest gift you will ever receive.

You needn’t worry, as you can now count on the morning after pills, a form of emergency birth control, have come to your rescue. You need to know that, they are not same as abortion pills and are regarded as one of the safest modes of avoiding pregnancy. These pills terminate unwanted pregnancy by interrupting the process of ovulation and fertilization. They are most effective in terminating pregnancy when consumed within 72 hours of having an unprotected sex. Some important facts about these contraceptive pills are as follows:

Avoid having an overdose of these pills. There’s a common myth that the consumption of more number of morning after pills than the recommended dose will be more effective in terminating pregnancy. However, this is not the case. You need to know that by having an overdose of these pills, you may have to face complications including nausea, headaches and blood clotting.

If you vomit within an hour after consuming a morning after pill, you should immediately consult your physician or your health care advisor, as you may need to repeat a dose of the morning after pill.

If you suffer from any other morning after pill symptoms such as severe pain in your leg, severe abdominal pain, severe headaches, weakness, numbness and dizziness, blurred or loss of vision, breathlessness and cough or chest pain, it is advised that you immediately contact your personal physician, who will then properly examine you and recommend proper measures.

A minor delay of about 5-6 days in your periods after having a morning after pill is quite normal. However, there should not be a delay in your menstrual cycle for a period of more than one month after the consumption of morning after pills. If you do not get your periods within a month of the expected date, it is advisable that you undergo a pregnancy test.

It is recommended that before taking morning after pills, you need to follow other precautionary birth control measures such as using condoms. Unlike condoms, morning after pill doesn’t provide any protection from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

It is advised that you always keep the morning after pills in their pill case. Also, you need to consume these pills only after consulting your physician or a health advisor.
